Badnikari – Celebrating Christmass Eve

In Macedonia, the Orthodox Christian religion adheres to the Julian calendar, instead of the Gregorian calendar. That’s why Macedonians celebrate the Christmas holidays two weeks later than other Christians. January, not December, is the month of many festivities, Saints’ days, and religious celebrations. Since January is also a month of many folklore traditions dating back from the pagan times, the celebrations, coinciding on the same dates mix the different rituals, and symbolism.
